They were donated from across the United States to serve in the Army, Navy Air Force, and Marines.

Over 4,000 family pets were trained and sent to war in Vietnam fewer than 300 returned to serve at other military bases.

Some were transferred to an uncertain fate with the South Vietnamese Army, several hundred others were killed in action.  The majority were either euthanized, or abandoned, as our forces withdrew.

They've been credited with saving the lives of over 10,000 American soldiers.

We remember them with love, America's forgotten heroes, the War Dog4.

Dedication of War Dog Memorial, Ft. Benning, GA October 8, 2000

In October 2000, the War Dog Memorial Fund1 and the Vietnam Dog Handler Association dedicated a memorial to all war dogs of all wars and all military branches on Sacrifice Field, Fort Benning, Georgia.  The memorial is now part of the The National Infantry Museum 2 at Fort Benning.

Now there is an effort underway to 'complete' the War Dog Memorial at Fort Benning.
Plans call for a series of 10 pedestals to be erected surrounding the Memorial, each will support a brass plaque enumerating the war dog units that served in W.W.II, Korea, Vietnam, The Gulf, and Bosnia.

Due to the total number of units, and the limitations of space, units of the Navy, Navy SEALs, and Coast Guard will be combined on one pedestal.

It is towards this effort that this page has been created.  The total cost of each pedestal is to be borne by the Units mentioned on the plaque.  Our pedestal, though representing the pride of the Navy, the SEALs, and the Coast Guard, does not cover enough 'handlers' to enable us to cover the costs by ourselves.  Though our search continues for former members of these units, we a currently in contact with approximately 40 Navy handlers, 2 SEAL handlers,
and 0 W.W.II Coast Guard handlers, (there were approximately 4,000 dogs used by the CG protecting our shores).

So I am sending out this request for your assistance.  Only with your help will the war dogs who served in the Navy, SEALs, and Coast Guard be able to take their rightful place in recognition alongside those of the Army, the Air Force, and the Marines.

and please add on the Memo line that it is for the
Naval services pedestal @ the  War Dog Memorial.

We have reached our initial goal of $3,600.00!  And, I've finally received the final estimate from The Columbus Monument Company for the total cost which will include the increased amount of text as shown below.   The toal cost will be $3,982.00.

We will also incur some additional costs to cover a wreath, and hiring a musician to play at the dedication ceremony.  There will also be a modest but real cost for printing and mailing of invitations to the event, and chartering the bus we'll likely need to carry the attendees from the hotel to Sacrifice Field and back.

I am asking your trust at this point to spend donations where I feel they are needed to cover these costs.  Any donations received in excess of the amounts needed to complete the pedestal and plaque, and to plan a proper dedication of the Naval Services Pedestal will be forwarded on to the Columbus Monument Company to go towards the cost of other pedestals.

Therefore, I am requesting donations be made by check to R. W. King at the above address.

Thank you for all your help getting us to this point.  It couldn't have been successfully completed without your help.

Please watch this page for updates to the dedication ceremony schedule.

1   The War Dog Memorial Fund is not to be confused with the National War Dog
Memorial Fund whose mission is to erect a memorial on the Mall in Washington, DC
Their address is: National War Dog Memorial Fund, c/o Vietnam Dog Handler
      Association   P.O. Box 5658   Oceanside, CA 92052 -5658

2   All donations made prior to mid March 2002 have been forwarded to the Infantry
Museum for the prescribed purpose of erecting this pedestal.
After mid March 2002 all donations will be forwarded on to The Columbus Monument
Company.  This change was made necessary by the Infantry Museum.  They are
initiating a fund drive of their own for improvements to the Museum and have made
the decision that maintaining the integrity of their fund drive, plus 10 separate Unit
pedestal funds would be too difficult and have therefore asked us to find a different
     location for our fund.
If funds collected are in excess of the amount required to purchase and place the
pedestal, the overage will be shared with other units to erect their pedestals.

3   R W King, VDHA Navy Unit Director.  The way this thing has been set up by the
organizers, the Unit Director is responsible for collecting the funds required to fabricate
and erect the pedestal for the units they are responsible for.  Please do NOT make your
donation payable to me, I am only the person attempting to organize the collection.

Please excuse the backgrounds surrounding the Unit insignia, the software I have
available does not permit me to show them as they should be.  Without backgrounds.

The Columbus Monument Company and the donations received.   The top of the pedestal will
include a brass plaque a draft of which is pictured blow

In Memory of the Dogs & Men of the U. S. Naval Services K-9 Units

U.S. COAST GUARD - WORLD WAR II (1942-1945)
NAVAL DISTRICTS 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 11, & 12
Over 4,000 dogs were used by the US Coast Guard through WWII to protect our shores, docks, and coastal manufacturing plants against the threat of penetration by German and Japanese spies and saboteurs.

U.S. NAVY - VIET NAM (1967 - 1972) - 1ST NAVY SENTRY DOG CORPS,
DA NANG & CAM RAHN BAY
Sentry Dogs provided the first line of defense at vital communications facilities and strategic materials storage areas against attack by sappers and saboteurs.  Waterdogs protected ship anchorages, docks, and bridges against penetration by enemy swimmers.  The 46 dogs and their handlers of the 1st Navy K-9 Corps truly were "Guardians of the Night".

U.S. NAVY - VIET NAM (1967 - 1972) - SEAL TEAMS 1 & 2
Used as both Aquadogs and Scout Dogs; the dogs of the Navy SEALs took the war to the enemy.  The dogs were used on their long-range patrols, providing an extra measure of enemy detection in a war with no front lines.

U.S. NAVY - BOSNIA (1997) – 65TH MILITARY POLICE COMPANY, K-9
One Navy dog team was attached to a US Army MP Company in Bosnia.  His duties included drug and explosives detection at checkpoints and roadblocks.

OUR DOGS WERE OUR FRIENDS AND COMPANIONS-IN-ARMS
WE MISS THEM, HONOR THEIR MEMORY, AND FOREVER SALUTE THEM

The final 'estimate' of the total cost of the Pedestal with the associated Plaque was $3,982.00.
