A Sea Cadet must be a young adult from the age of 13 to 18. In the Sea Cadet Corps, a cadet learns many skills that can be very helpful at home, at school, and outside of school. Sea Cadets learn a variety of things from shining their shoes, and pressing and wearing the Naval Uniform. A Cadet also learns about pride, and how to show pride in the United States, the Navy, the Navy Uniform in which they wear, and most of all; pride in themselves. A Cadet learns and shows the core values which are: * HONOR * COURAGE * COMMITMENT A Sea Cadet learns and uses the following: Leadership skills watch standing, military drill, basic seamanship, and their 11 General Orders of a Sentry. Even though the Sea Cadets is a youth development program, there are manuals and correspondence courses they must complete, ranging from the BMR (Basic Military Requirements) up to the Chief Petty Officer Correspondence Course. Many cadets can be leaders at their home units, such as squad leaders, company commanders, leading petty officers, and Master-at-arms. In the Sea Cadets, cadets earn everything they achieve for. You can earn awards and ribbons. For example, a unit commendation to the USNSCC Chairman’s Medal. There are many different training programs a cadet can partake in outside of their home unit, like go to Recruit Training (Boot Camp) for two weeks, or complete two weeks of Coast Guard Training. A Cadet can even train with real Navy SEALs at the special USNSCC SEAL Training. Noting is impossible to do in the Sea Cadets. “Sea Cadets are not just your typical teenager, they are young adults that want to be successful at what they do.” The limit of what one can learn in the Sea Cadets is bounded by the limit of their abilities and imagination. |
