Women Abused Inhumanely Mistreated in the US Postal Workplace
The Rape of Cynthia Stoll
US Postal Service Above the Law?
In 1990 this quiet, shy, single mom of three boys,
a letter sorting machine operator
fled the workplace to escape the extreme
sexual harassment of the US Postal Service.
The Post Office admitted it did occur:
She was "subjected to persistent and
pervasive hostile environment sexual harassment
from a blur
of men."
Numerous male coworkers and supervisors
asked her to perform oral sex on them,
commented on her body,
shot rubber bands at her backside,
asked her to wear lacy
black underwear for them,
bumped and rubbed up against her
from behind,
pressed their erect penises into her back
while
she was sorting mail and unable to get away,
followed her
into the women's bathroom,
asked her to go on vacations,
"stalked her throughout the postal facility,"
and fondled her
body.
The EEOC Administrative Law Judge found
much of the sexual harassment was
perpetrated by supervisors.
Her immediate supervisor, Almendarez
"fostered much of the sexual
harassment,"
he "unreasonably intimidated"
(as if any intimidation was reasonable)
On two occasions as she menstruated heavily she
was refused permission
to go to the ladies room.
Forcing her
to remain at her letter-sorting console she bled all over
herself before her coworkers who testified.
The Administrative Law Judge described her supervisor
"unsympathetic attitude toward her
female health needs"
"revolting and abusive."
The "Good" Supervisor -- Bad Supervisor Tactic
To the "rescue" arrived supervisor, John Garrard,
intervened on her behalf with Almendarez
and then he demanded sexual services from her as a quid
pro quo.
In the workplace Garrard would approach her with,
"want something to suck on?"
"I want to f--- you"
"Do you f--- as good as you look?"
Rejected by Cynthia...
He raped her repeatedly.
Simply, upper management ordered him to stay away from her.
The punishment?
Although, EEOC Judge & US Postal Service
agreed their supervisor was a rapist...
He received an "EEO Sensitivity Training Class"
Office of Federal Operations decision
directed the Post Office to
"afford EEO sensitivity training"
to supervisor
John Garrard,
The Post Office complied with
none of these remedial actions, and fought
her on "front pay."
Instead, it did nothing for more than a year.
Described by the Administrative Law Judge
as "scarred for life"
Cynthia went on to
attempt suicide numerous times.
And so little... for violence against women
and the employer's "Zero" Tolerance policies.
