RAILROAD LOCOMOTIVES
@ DAVIS BROS.
One of our first interests was trains, and railroading in general. With one uncle and one good friend of my parents having been railroaders, with past relatives having worked for railroads, and with the NYC "water level route" running right through our town, it was kind of destined to be an interest. Over the years, in pursuit of knowledge about locomotives, we have aquired a rather large collection of books and manuals. Some of those will be shown here, along with articles about certain aspects of locomotion. Use the link buttons below to navigate to the various parts of this newest DAVIS BROS. site. Enjoy!!
As the timetable at left ( and the horrible background color I've chosen ) hints at, we grew up along the Penn Central.  We lived in a litttle town indicated on the above map as "Shawville". The real town hasn't gone by that name for many, many years, long before this 1969 timetable in fact. But, the original settlement's name stuck with the railroad, and not until Conrail timetables was the name changed!
We were lucky, as when trains came west from Berea, they had a relatively straight shot into Elyria. This was the former NYC "water level route". Timetable speeds indicated in the table at left were 80 mph for passenger trains and 60 mph for freight between Berea and control point 285, just east of Elyria. And, when all their locomotives were running, they would do it! We got to see many sets of NYC GP-40's, still in 4 unit sets on Flexi-Van trains. We got to see F units too, sometimes in bunches, and sometimes singly in consists. They were our favorites to watch for. We wondered what the differences were between the types of locomotives we saw. We've never stopped.
