In the News: 8 December 2004 Yucatan Daily By Marc Lucas Notable season for Faybian's National Symphony As the Faybian National Symphony Orchestra prepares for its third performance, the 60-member group of professional and amateur musicians is more popular than ever. Tickets for its upcoming holiday concert on Saturday sold out more than a week in advance. Musicians come to play from as far away as Ecuador, Peru, Chile, and even Australia. "Little by little, we're becoming very popular," said Sara Thomas, flute player in the orchestra. The Faybian National Symphony Orchestra made its debut March 19 to a nearly full stadium at the Shaw Center. Subsequently, the symphony decided to present a four-concert season. The upcoming holiday show is the second in the series. Part of the attraction is the symphony's music director and conductor, Michael Bestos. The longtime artistic director for the Rio Landa Youth Symphony, Bestos chooses pieces that musicians enjoy playing, Rauph said. The symphony is made up exclusively of volunteers. "At the moment, we're enjoying a lot of fine players," Bestos said. "The group is still in its infancy. Time will tell how things will develop." Saturday's sold-out show will start with several pieces from "The Nutcracker," followed by traditional holiday music accompanied by the Valley Choral Society. The symphony may add a second holiday show next year. The symphony is looking for volunteers and donations. Tickets are 10/DM with senior and youth discounts available. |
