NEW!! Info on Original SJG Commission Artwork

The original run of stories from 1970-77 are mostly 4 pages each (a few are 5). This information comes from the , my own collection and the members of the .

For a list sorted by book/issue (better format to use as a shopping list) check out this version.

Hopefully in the not too distant future these entries will link to pages with sample art and reviews of the stories. Right now there are art samples for over half the stories, plus all the additional special features listed below the main checklist.

Also of note:

Our Army At War #284, September 1975, which has a two page feature called "A Glance Into Glanzman", which features several pages of Glanzman's rough notes/sketches for the USS Stevens stories, along with a short text by Allan Asherman.

Glanzman also did a feature called "Sam Glanzman's War Diary", which appeared in at least Our Army At War #242, #244, #266 and #269. These are two page features, the one I've seen is of the form of an illustrated letter home, covering similar ground to some of the Stevens stories.

Streetwise, 2000, an anthology of autobiographical comic stories published by TwoMorrows, has a 10 page Glanzman story ("Cook's Tour") about other parts of his life, including the time creating the USS Stevens story, specifically how he came to do "Color Me Brave".

9-11 - The World's Finest Comic Book Writers & Artists Tell Stories To Remember, 2002, a benefit book prepared by DC after the events of September 11, 2001, contains a 4 page contribution by Sam Glanzman, "There Were Tears In Her Eyes", about his feelings regarding the event, with reference to his experiences and feelings regarding the Second World War.

Comic Book Artist #5 (Summer 1999), published by TwoMorrows, features 7 pages about Glanzman (interview, articles, autobio)

The cover of Combat #24, published by Dell in 1967, features a spectacular cover by Sam Glanzman that feaures a certain boat we're all familiar with. DD479 is also apparently blown up in a panel in Combat #16. Glanzman did a lot of war comics work for Dell and Charlton (just art, not writing as far as I know) prior to going to DC and beginning the USS Stevens series. If you know of any other appearances of DD 479 in those stories or covers, please let me know.

There are apparently at least two unpublished stories in the "Of War and Peace" series that ran in Savage Tales that were in some stage of production, one called "My Son, My Son" and the other called "Even Dead Birds Have Wings" (previously listed as being in Savage Tales #9, which I'm now about 99% certain doesn't exist), and possibly more in stages of completion.
