Anarchists, punks, as well as others from Mexico City do not have land to protect. They are aligned with those of us in the united states who are not protecting a way of life that has existed for centuries but instead are fighting off the governments attempts of control while attempting to create a new world that is possible. But they to are using a common technique seen all across mexico. They are occupying a University Auditorium. Institutionally named Justo Sierra Auditorium was first squatted during the now well-known 5 month student strikes of 1968. The name was changed to Che Guevara Auditorium. After the slaughter of many of those students the building eerily stood as little more than a memorial until Brigada Verda, anti-authoritarian group, started using it in 1999. Then it was used again during 20th of april strike until feb 2000. Then in sept 2002, black market drugs and such until little by little anarchist ideas arrived for now it builds resistance against the state. Meetings every Tuesday… In the heavily populated city, squatting is just not an option. There are college students who live in their cars due to the lack of housing. At Che Guevara Auditorium there are rooms open to those who need a safe place to sleep at night. A list of workshops is available where different rooms of the building have been evolved from dust farms into silk-screening workshops for making flyers and t-shirts, a library, a kitchen where food is collectively cooked and sold to students to fund other projects.
