"MEDICAL SERVICES"
.-INOCULATIONS: None are required for travel to Cuba.
.-MEDICAL CARE: Most hotels have a nurse or doctor on duty to give free, immediate attention for minor illnesses and injuries. Cuba has several hospitals and clinics and there are 2 excellent tourist hospitals in Havana. They charge a fee in dollars, but less than a hospital visit in the U.S. Havanatur sells medical insurance for a fee of $5 a day for illnesses and accidents that happen in Cuba.
.-WATER: We recommend drinking bottled water, not because the water is considered contaminated, but because unfamiliar bacteria can cause diarrhea and other stomach problems in travelers. We suggest purchasing water by the bottle or by the case to keep in your room. There is filtered water available at some Casa Particular. Summer travelers should be especially careful to drink plenty of water. We don’t discourage eating salads in restaurants (probably washed in tap water) or brushing your teeth at the sink, but each person will need to decide how careful they should be based on their own sensitivity.
.-FOOD: Typical Cuban food is rice and beans, with meat, fish, or chicken, and salad. They also usually serve a vianda, starchy food like plantains, boniato (white sweet potato), or yucca, boiled or fried.
.-TOURISTS NEEDING MEDICAL ASSISTANCE are usually steered to the CLINICA CIRA GARCIA, at Calle 20 # 4101, Miramar, tel. 33-2811.The fully staffed hospital is entirely dedicated to serving foreigners. You pay in dollars-credit cards are acceptable unless they´re issued on an USA bank- (in which case, cash are required)
