On December 17,1996, unkown gunmen stormed a hospital complex in Novye Atagi in the pre-dawn hours and using silencers on their weapons roamed from room to room, breaking doors and spraying bullets at random. Sources attributed the attack to an attempt to escalate turmoil as the country struggled for independence from Russia.
