Viktor Adler | ||||||||||||||
Prominent socialist member of the Austrian parliament. Adler was born on 24 June 1852, in Prag. Upon declaration of war, Kaiser Franz Josef invoked Article 14 (the "dictatorship" clause) of the Austrian constitution and suspended parliament. Adler filled his free time by writing articles that drew the wrath of the government, particularly since the war was going unfavourably for the Austrians. His son, Friedrich Adler, was also a radical socialist and parliament member. Friedrich gained notoriety by assassinating Austrian Chancellor Graf Stürgkh in 1916. While the younger Adler went to prison, the elder Adler continued in his capacity as leader of the socialists. GWS, 11/00 |
