Friedrich von Bernhardi
Friedrich von Bernhardi was born in 1849 in Esthonia, then part of the Russian Empire.  Bernhardi's fame was achieved when he was a Prussian Cavalryman during the Franco-Prussian War in 1871, and managed to be the first German to ride through the Arc de Triomphe during the Germans' victory parade.  Following this service, he joined the German army's general staff as and archivist and led the war history section from 1898 until 1901.

During the World War, Berhardi was in command of the Berhardi Corps, part of Group
Woyrsch, which straddled the Pinsk Marshes and the Volhynian plain.  His force was located north of the Lutsk sector, which was the scene of the most devastating attack the Russians launched during the war.  He was awarded the Pour le Merite in 1916, following a challenging service on the Eastern Front as the Brussilov Offensive threatened to cave in the whole southern sector.  Berhardi wrote Germany and the Next War, well before the outbreak of World War I.

Friedrich von Bernhardi died in 1930.
