Oberleutnant Josef Schneider Edler von Manns-Au was granted the position of chief of staff for the XIV. Army in December 1906, replacing Obst Johann Freiherr von Kirchbach auf Lauterbach. His commander was the Archduke Eugen. Schneider remained the Corps' chief of staff until November 1907, when he was succeeded by Oberleutnant Kletus Pichler. Josef Schneider began the war ranked GM, and in command of the 5. infantry brigade, part of Feldmarschalleutnant Josef Roth's 3. infantry division in the XIV. Corps of the Archduke Josef Ferdinand. GM Schneider was given control of the 24. Infantry Division in January 1915, succeeding FML Karl Edler von Langer. He held this command for only six months, turning it over in July to GM Adolf Urbarz who managed the division all the way to wars' end. FML Schneider was placed in command of the 28. Infantry Division in October 1915, after the departure of its previous leader, GM Alfred Edler von Hinke. Then he controlled this force all the way to March 1918. During this time, Schneider was appointed to be chief of staff for the XIX. Corps in September 1917. His superior was GdI Ignaz Freiherr Trollmann von Lovcenberg. Schneider remained in this position until September 1918. Before he left this position, he had returned briefly to the 28. Infantry Division and finally left both at the same time for a new challenge. His position in the 28. Infantry Division was taken up by GM Alfred von Zeidler. Then, FML Schneider was given the task of reorganising the IX. Corps in September, after it was disbanded by its previous commander, GdI Alfred Edler von Schenk. Schneider brought his Corps back to its war footing, and remained in command until wars' end. GWS, 3/02 |
