Charlevoix Stage Report
by Magalie Boulay

Voici le compte-rendu que Magalie Boulay a fait parvenir à Dan Proulx, directeur sportif de l'équipe Opus Bike, après le Grand Prix de Charlevoix qui s'est déroulé les 8 et 9 juin 2002.

Here's the report from this weekend's race. First of all, it was a qualification for the provincial team for Nationals so it was quite important. It was a three stages race. The first one was a 17km time trial, at l'île aux Coudres, so we had to take the boat to get there. It was a flat course 'til the last 6 km where it was a bit more hilly, but nothing major. Gen (Geneviève LeBlanc) placed first, and I got second, thirdy seconds behind.

In the evening there was a crit, downtown Baie St-Paul, only a 15 km race. It was a very technical course, with sharp turns and only 1km per lap, so it was fast. Gen ans I started the race very fast and the pace stayed the same after. There was one guy in a breakaway and then there was our pack. With only 15 laps I knew it would be important to stay in front so I positioned myself always in the top three riders, and then I was able in the last lap, with two turns to go, to attack as hard as I could and finish first junior and fourth of everybody. We were with the masters C-D, senior women and master women. Gen and I did a pretty good race, going constantly at the front, attacking, giving the pace. She finished second.

The next day, our last stage was the road race. A 55km race, very, very, very hilly. It started with a 5,5 km hill, where Gen and I were able to stay for about 4,5 km with the leaders but then we got drop and did the hole race with another master. All the other juniors were droped after the first 200 meters of the first hill. So we did the race in our little pack of three, chasing the group of four leaders in front. We did not catch them but I think we did pretty good, challenging ourselves and kept being strong in those hills. It was sprint finish between Gen and I, and I ended up crossing the line first, but we both did a great race. We finished like 10 minutes in front of the third junior. Overall, Gen finished first, 29 seconds in front of me and I placed second. So we once again proved how challenging we can be, and how Opus is dominating in Quebec, by still not having lost any race.

To finish I would like to thank you again Dan for giving me the chance to be on your team and having the chace to race in a higher level like in the Tour du Grand Montreal. It was one of my best race ever and I'm so glad that, as a junior, I was able to compete with those girls. I learned so many things that I'll surely use in my following races. The girls are incredible too. Take care all of you.

See ya
Magalie
