When thirty-year-old Hannah Tailford was discovered drowned in the Thames River with only her stockings around her ankles and her panties stuffed in her mouth on Febrauary 2, 1964, police didn't think much of it. Just a London prostitute unlucky enough to have discovered first-hand the dangers of her profession. alarms began to go off when another woman, Irene Lockwood, turned up naked and murdered in the Thames and Helen Barthelemy was discovered on April 24 in a sports field, killed with their front teeth knocked out, possibly as a result of forced oral sex.
The London press quickly dubbed this newest serial killer "Jack The Stripper" and waited for another victim, which the unknown slayer provided on July 14 when Mary Fleming was found dead, naked with her dentures missing. Next was Margaret McGowan who authorities felt had been alive during much of the month she had been missing. The final victim was Bridgett O'Hara, last seen on January 11, 1965, and found mummified under some bushes near a paint shop, which was interesting since some of the women had very tiny dots of paint on their corpses when found.
Though the killing ended there, the mystery of The Stripper had never been resolved. Police suspect two women found prior to the six known victims may have been part of the string of slayings, but the link is debated to this day. A security guard who's patrol included the paint shop near where O'Hara's body was found (and also where many think the women's corpses were stored before being dumped) committed suicide soon after the murder spree ended and remains just one of the top suspects to this day.
