Beginning in 1984, Los Angeles prostitutes began turning up dead at a more alarming rate than usual. Most were subjected to tortuous slashing before being strangled or stabbed to death and dumped like garbage in the streets.
The slayings continued through 1987 with as many as twenty total victims reported. Despite police sketches from fortunate women that survived attacks that depicted a black man with a mustach in his 30's, no leads ever panned out in the case. Los Angeles police feel that two convicted killers could be responsibe for some of the murders but the majority were likely performed by a single elusive man.
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Ricky Ross was arrested in connection with the slayings and skewered in the press. His career was effectively ruined before hewas cleared of any involvement with the string of homocides and it appears as if the women's murderer, who seems to be inactive at this time, may never be apprehended.
