Haiku for December

by Victor P. Gendrano

holiday cheer
our neighbor's Christmas lights
stay up all year

football fever
their bed grows colder
each passing game

Christmas billboard
don't put off your happiness
in a layaway

autumn dusk
the echoes of footsteps
in her empty room

first winter chill
she still waits for the call
from her daughter

cloudy morning
a mound of mushrooms sprouts
in the rain-soaked lawn

your absence grows
more palpable each day
winter chill
