Gerbil pet

Victor P. Gendrano

Our procession of three reaches the backyard where a hole has been dug. Kira, our 13-year old granddaughter, weeps silently as she puts the dead body of Cotton, her gerbil pet, in its grave.

Her grandma Lucy tries to console Kira and delivers a tribute to the deceased animal, first saying that Cotton was a good pet for her and will be sorely missed. Then she adds, "Rest in peace Cotton. Your remains will fertilize the soil and when our new roses bloom, we will think of you and remember."
