Welcome to my ongoing picture poems gallery, a combination of haiku and pictures commonly referred to as haiga. They are also variously called haiku painting, poem painting, photo haiku or haiku photo. The accompanying graphics are sometimes related to the poems, but other times the pictures only complement them. The haiga here are my own interpretations
of the art form using cliparts, photos, and line drawings.
Haiga originated in Japan alongside the development of haiku around 1600. Since poets used calligraphy in writing
haiku, the subsequent addition of the same brush and ink artwork with the poem followed. Normally, the same poet adds painting to his works, but nowadays it is not unusual to have two artists compose haiga, the poet writing the verse and the painter doing the artwork. There is even a third person who does the translation of the haiku from its original language to another one, say Japanese to English.
Presently, haiga is enjoying popularity worldwide with haijins, photographers, painters, and calligraphers enriching the art form, a natural offspring of haiku. The Internet obviously helps in their growing popularity, proliferation, and exposure to more people.
