My Birthday
Victor P. Gendrano
Today, May 14, is my birthday. This morning when I woke up, I uttered a prayer of thanks for being alive and blessed with good health and surrounded by a loving family As is my wont, I brewed my mail-ordered coffee from Sweden and brought a cup to the backyard garden to inspect the progress of the growth of my plants.
The cherry tomatoes are in full bloom but I still could not see any fruits. The pole beans are already twisting upwards to a makeshift trellis and the bush beans I planted in pots are almost flowering. And the potted cactus is exhibiting a multiple of florets which is unusual considering that in the past years I only get at most one flower a season.
Satisfied that everything is alright, I put my chair near the loquat fruit tree to shield me from southern California's sizzling temperature already rising up even at this early hour. I then sat down and savored the aroma of my Cafe Sperl from Vienna inspired by the coffeehouse frequented by Brahms. No haiku writing, just relaxing with every sip of coffee, enjoying the plants, and living with the moment.
