Stenotic Nares = "Pinched nostrils"
	Pinched nostrils, (Stenotic nares) is a deformity found most commonly in short nosed dogs, occasionally including griffons. Stenotic nares are present at birth, and are simply too narrow to allow proper air intake. Selective breeding of dogs with wide open nostrils is recommended. If your dog has any of the following; noisy breathing exercise intolerance blue appearance to the gums, (signifying lack of oxygen) passing out an inspection by your vet is recommended, as quite often, a very simple surgical procedure can eliminate the problem. If your griffon does have difficulty breathing due to pinched nostrils, we recommend you do not breed with this particular griffon, as it will most likely be passed on to the offspring. Increased airway compromising due to brachycephalic airway syndrome over a year or more can lead to increasing respiratory problems. With the repeated pressure of the effort to inhale over time, the larynx loses strength and can collapse, causing the dog to be powerless to breathe properly, and ultimately death. Surgery can increase the nostril size and the dog can go on to live a normal life.
