INC. I had the great opportunity to do my summer internship with the largest retail in the world and second largest company in the U.S., Wal-Mart. I worked for Wal-Mart from May to August 2001. Now I'm still working for them on a project-by-project consultative basis. My experiences with the company have enabled me to gain a valuable education in business development and accounting structure. I have had the opportunity to involve myself in many areas of the company from accounting to marketing, and from operations to human resources and e-commerce. I have had the opportunity to see the front end and back end development of a very successful company. My recent projects have included the understand of the trends of the business in the district of Utah, which includes three successful stores and two supercenters, providing support to its growth. Specific projects include:
Wal-Mart Inc. currently has over 4,000 stores that are operational and over 1 million associates and it is continually expanding. The strongest growth market is in the Supercenters Division. Wal Mart had revenues of US$ 198.4 billion in the fiscal year of 2001. Since 1991, when Wal-Mart entered the international market, it has been expanding in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, Mexico, Puerto Rico, South Korea, and the United Kingdom. SPEEDY INC. From 1996-2000 I was the responsible for the financial department of Sir Speedy Brazil. I was with Sir Speedy since it entered in the Brazilian market. I had the opportunity to participate in the planning and implementation of the business plan, from contract of architects to remodel the building to the research and importation process of US$ 1 million Germany printing machines to run in our operation. After one short year I was promoted to financial manager where I worked organizing and training over 6 employees directly under my supervision. These were very challenger years were I needed to face very tightened cash flows against all the demands a new business requires. As a financial manager I had the opportunity to work very close with bankers and suppliers in a tremendous efforts to reduce raw material costs. When I left the company to work on my MBA degree, I had reduced such costs by 15%. Another issue I had the opportunity to work on was in the design of a new billing system compatible to the Brazilian's market needs. Through this new system, I was able to reduce the bad credit portfolio by 40%. The solution included the redesign of some applications in Macintosh computers to better communicate with customer and banks, including the exchange of digital files. Consequently, my position, and the position of all of the associates in our operation, necessitated a high level of honesty, integrity, and dependability as the flow of money, funds, legal documents and the priceless relationship with our franchisees were placed under our care. In addition, as a financial manager, I had the opportunity to:
Sir Speedy is the world's largest provider of digital printing services. With headquarters in Mission Viejo, California, Sir Speedy operates more than 1,500 facilities all around the world. The revenues for the fiscal year of 2001 were of $ 400 million. [BYU] [Wal-Mart] [Sir Speedy] [NCH] [Duncan] NATIONAL
CHEMSEARCH - NCH CORP. In May 1993, just after returning from a very successfully volunteer work in the Minas Gerais State, I was hired at NCH to be the administrative link between factory, sales offices and headquarters. On this challenger position, I was responsible to report sales volume, trends and projections daily to corporate offices and senior executives. One of the biggest challenges I faced during this time, was to resolve frequent conflicts among 185 salespeople. Disputes about customers, commissions and geographic sales area were the most common problems I had to address everyday. At the end of 1993, after better understanding my responsibilities, I approached one of ours marketing director to suggest an alternative niche that was pretty much abandoned in our sales efforts, the billion dollars government business. With his support, I started to coordinate all the public auction processes at federal agencies. These are expensive, long and tricky processes that require complete attention to details and knowledge of laws to even be able to bid in any auction. Once passed the documental phase, another challenge was to figure out bid price for our products taking in consideration risk, time value of the money, competition, costs, relationship with other customers and so on. All this hard work paid off when in 1995 we reach the significant mark of 18% of total monthly sales through the public auction processes. One special remark about my experience at NCH was the opportunity to work side-by-side to one of the greatest leader I got to know, Mr. Dallas N. Archibald. His was the vice-president of marketing to Latin America and I was fortunately enough to be his personal assistant for over three years. Mr. Archibald has the special talent to motivate people with fairness and passion. He had a great influence in my decision to go forward to an MBA. I believe I learned much from his people skills. Among other responsibilities at NCH:
NCH has a very aggressive sales force with over 185 salespeople just in Brazil. Its offices in Brazil are located in the city of Sao Paulo, Recife, Rio de Janeiro and Porto Alegre. Its factory is located in the city of Sorocaba, Sao Paulo. The headquarters in Dallas, Texas, oversee offices and factories all around the world. The NCH comprises the companies EuroQuem, Mantek, Kernite, Aqua Plus, Friendly, Certified, Quimisa, X-Ergon and Chemsearch. With revenues of US$ 728 million in fiscal year of 2001, NCH is a S&P 400 Company. NCH USA and GROUP NCH INTERNATIONAL manufacture and market an extensive line of maintenance, repair and supply products to customers in over 50 countries worldwide. NCH products include chemical specialties, fasteners, welding alloys and plumbing parts as well as maintenance supply products. These products are sold and serviced primarily through the Corporation's own sales force. [BYU] [Wal-Mart] [Sir Speedy] [NCH] [Duncan]
For over two years I worked for Duncan & Golladay in Sao Paulo. Duncan & Golladay was the largest regional accounting firm specialized in American Tax. With consultants in Mesa, Texas and Sao Paulo, Brazil we elaborated Income Tax for American people who were living and working in Brazil. We filed Tax to the Brazilian Government and IRS as well. I was responsible to contact clients and require documents, visit the American Consulate to gather information and keep informed about the constant changes in the Tax Law and finally to elaborate the best approach for each client/case. That work required plenty of attention to minutiae, since the chances to save (or waste) the clients money were real. Other responsibilities:
