Gaohu
The Gaohu,
modelled after the Erhu, appeared approximately in the 1920s. It
is slightly smaller in size with a 4 or 5 higher tuning. The
major difference lies in the position of the instrument's body
when played; the player clasps the tube with his knees instead of
placing it upon the lift knee. This enables its volume and timbre
to be controlled. The Gaohu's register is clear and brigh; the
low one is mellow and full. The Gaohu is broadly used as an
important bowed-string instrument due to its high pirtch.
In todays Chinese
Orchestra, the Gaohu soloist is normally the concertmaster,
sitting on the conductor's left.
Solos for the Gaohu
includes Regret and Autumn Moon on a Calm Lake.
