Sift flour, salt, soda and baking powder together.
Add shortening, then gradually add buttermilk and work into a dough that is stiff.
Pinch off enough dough to roll with both hands into each biscuit. Dough may also be rolled out onto a floured board or surface and cut into biscuits with a biscuit cutter or glass.
Place in greased pan and bake in moderate oven until done and brown.
