Separate eggs and beat eggs whites first of all. Set beaten egg whites aside. Cream butter and sugar. Add 1 egg yolk at a time until all are mixed. Add half of the buttermilk and the flour, a little at a time, until all is added. To the other half of the buttermilk, add the soda that has been dissolved in a little warm water. Add to the flour mixture. Fold in the well-beaten egg whites and vanilla.
Bake in 300 degree oven for 1 hour, or until done. It make take 1 1/2 hours to bake.
