Harmon Lewis is originally from Mississippi and graduated cum laude from Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi with a B.A. degree in Organ. Subsequently, he took his Master of Music degree from Indiana University in 1964 and that same year was the first prize winner of the Fort Wayne National Organ Playing Competition. He was Assistant Professor for four years (Chairman of the Music Department for 2 years) at Centre College of Kentucky and taught organ, piano, theory, and humanities. Returning to graduate school at Indiana University in Bloomington, he earned the Doctor of Music degree in 1979. During doctoral study Mr. Lewis became interested in Baroque performance practice, particularly figured bass improvisation and began serious study of the harpsichord. From 1972-1978 Mr. Lewis was artist-in -residence at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia and was a regular performer on the CBC's "Organists in Recital" program as well as performing many recitals in the US and Canada.In 1972 Harmon Lewis joined the renowned doublebassist, Gary Karr, in theKarr-Lewis Duo. Together they have a most active recital career and perform more than 100 concerts each year, traveling regularly within North America, South America, as well as Europe and the Far East. They appear frequently at many of the prestigious summer festival in Gstaad, Switzerland,Edinburgh Festival and British Columbia's Victoria International Festival.
