Milk Usage Survey

Thank you for visiting this site.

I am conducting a small survey for a marketing project and I'd really appreciate it if you could spare a few minutes to give me your answers to these questions. You do not need to submit elaborate answers unless you would personally prefer to (1-2 sentences would suffice in most cases; single word answers are perfect for some questions).

Please let me know if you have any issues or concerns about the nature of this survey and I'd be happy to discuss it with you personally.

Since I need your answers soon, I would totally appreciate it if you could send me your responses latest by Feb 1st.

Feel free to reach me at 513-260-9407 or send an email to vikramts@yahoo.com if you have any questions!

Thanks a lot

Vikram Srinivasan

5.If you have children (under 14 years) in your family, would you recommend they drink a glass of milk every day?Why/Why not?
Yes No

Nutrition content in Milk

6.Do you check your milk carton's nutritional information while purchasing?
Yes No

7.Recent studies question the nutrition content in milk. These are some of the facts that have been established.
a)Much of milk's protein is contained in casein which goes undigested and sticks to human intestinal walls.
b)As much as milk is rich in protein, it also causes the human digestive system to lose its protein-retention capacity. In other words, the more protein you take in through milk, the more protein goes wasted and unabsorbed.
c)Studies revealed that African-American people who consumed 3 or more glasses of milk were more prone to prostate cancer than men who reported never drinking whole milk.
d)Cows reared for milk production are fed a lot of growth hormones, antibiotics and other chemicals to increase their yield. These chemicals, known to cause many diseases, find their way into the milk produced. And they are joined by pus from udders, mucus and live bacteria.
e)Osteoporosis arises from premature aging of bones. But this cannot be prevented by excessive calcium intake. The animal proteins of meat and dairy products cause calcium loss. The level of calcium needed in the diet depends greatly on the animal protein intake. For many of the high animal protein diets , it may not be possible to consume enough calcium in the diet to compensate for the amount lost to these high-acid proteins. For this reason, people with high dairy intake have among the highest osteoporosis rates as well.
f)All the protein that a human body needs can come from legumes (beans, peas, and peanuts), vegetables, nuts, seeds, yeast, and tofu. Therefore, milk can very well be replaced by other nutritious (and animal-friendly) substitutes.
How does this knowledge affect your stand on milk consumption?

8.How conscious are you about the health standards maintained in the dairy industry?
Very conscious. I have visited a milk producing facility
Somewhat conscious. I keep myself informed on what is happening in industry practices.
Conscious. I register information I might tend to hear from third persons.
Not so sure. Why, should I be?
Couldn't care less!

Treatment of Cows/Calves in Dairy Industry

9.Which of the following facts were/are you aware of?
Although a cow's life expectancy is 25 years, industrial practices render it incapable for milk production in 5 years, after which it is slaughtered.
As such, cows can produce 16 pounds of milk every day for their calves. However, by mixing antibiotics, growth hormones and other chemicals in their diet, cows are forced to produce as much as 50 pounds of milk per day.
To produce milk, a cow needs to give birth to a calf. Calves born this way are weaned away 48 hours after birth, although they should be allowed to bond with their mothers for a full 12 months.
Around 170,000 calves die within their first month. The males which survive are used for veal.
Bovine Growth Hormones are injected into cows to improve their milk producing capacity. Such cows experience 21%,46% and 51% increase in their hormonal glands when administered low, medium and high dosages. As consumers of milk, we are prone to such effects as well.
Cows are fed food which includes (among others) Selenium,Magnesium Oxide,Pork, tallow fat from dead cows, dried blood, ground fish and more.

10.What is your stand on animal rights?

11.Veal is obtained by killing infant calves which have been separated from their mothers and denied proper nutrition. They are made to stand anywhere from 3-18 weeks. Often, killing practices are in no way quick to inflict minimal pain. Would you support a ban on killing calves for veal?If No, why not?
Yes No

Animal-friendly substitutes for milk

12.Given authentic information about their nutritional advantages, would you consider switching to a more healthy and humane supplement to cow's milk (Eg:Soymilk)? If No, why not?
Yes No

13.Given authentic information about its nutritional advantages, if you aren't a vegan already, would you consider switching to a vegan diet (no animal product usage in any way , including no dairy products)? If No, why not?
Yes No
