Salient Features of the Course Content
Swami Vivekananda’s Philosophy of man-making education forms the basis
and directive principle of our course – content. The syllabi of our
courses have been framed with a view to mould the character and skills of
the students and to enable them to become good, productive and dutiful citizens.
The main aim of our course content is to provide our students with not only a foundational knowledge but also a broad and modern perspective of the different philosophical systems. Both Indian as well as Western philosophical systems are taught. Besides these, allied subjects like sociology, psychology, etc., help the students in not only acquiring a broad-based knowledge, but also to secure suitable jobs and to join diverse courses in higher education. An application oriented subject entitled “Yoga and Para-Psychology” has been introduced, which is received enthusiastically by our Under Graduate students.
The Department offers Logic – both Traditional as well as Modern Symbolic Logic – at the UG and PG levels. Symbolic Logic becomes the base for many scientific and technological courses. The optional papers on the Philosophy of Kant, Political Philosophy and Philosophy of Science are the other distinctive features of our PG course.
Many of the subjects offered by us at the UG and PG levels, especially, the papers on Logic, Sociology, Psychology and Political Philosophy, help our students to face the competitive examinations like UPSC, TNPSC, SLET and NET Examination of the UGC confidently and come out successfully.
Periodical review and revision of the syllabi with a view to keeping pace with the latest developments in the subject ensure that our course is one of the best at the International level. This is substantiated by the fact that the Buddhist Monasteries of Thailand send their monks every year to the Department to study M.A. Philosophy.

2000 – 2001 3
Library
Any student who could improve his knowledge seeks the guidance of a library.
If you store some books in your house, they will become treasures after some
time by building up themselves into a Library. Whether it is fiction or itihasas
or science or philosophy, one gets a deep knowledge only through the library.
We are not falling short in it. We have built up our Department Library thanks to Dr. T.N. Ganapathy, Former Head of the Department who was not only the originator but also an enthusiastic worker who made us realize the need of the library and with the cooperation of the faculty members built up the Department Library. Now we have more than 2000 books in our Department Library.
Tutorial System
This is another distinctive feature of the Department. Under this system,
each class is placed under the direct, personal care of a lecturer. This tutor-in-charge
is responsible for all academic and disciplinary aspects of the class. The
academically weak students are identified and the tutor-in-charge, by giving
his personal advice and suggestions, helps the students to get out of their
difficulties. Besides this, regularity and punctuality in the matter of attending
classes are also closely monitored by the tutor-in-charge. Erring students
are pulled up and in extreme cases, the parents of the students are called
upon to meet the Head of the Department and the Tutor-in-charge for discussing
the problems concerning their children. Often the student comes out with a
serious domestic or psychological problem which is found to hinder his academic
progress – The tutor-in-charge, by his guidance and counselling, helps
the students to face his problems with confidence and find solutions for the
same. All these efforts, while bridging the gulf between the teachers and
the taught, also result in the enhanced academic performance of the students.
Guidance and Counselling
Adolescent period is a turbulent one. Unless the youth – energy is properly
channelised, the journey of the youth will be a journey without a goal. Towards
this objective, our Department has been functioning as a centre for counselling
and guidance; though the modern students are talented, there are diversions
which impede their progress in their studies. Through counselling and guidance,
the students are free from deviant behaviors. In short, our Department helps
the modern youth in their personality development.
Philosophy Association
This association is a major function of the Department with a view to: (i)
introducing the students to new areas and developments in Philosophy with
a thrust on relevance to present times and (ii) bringing out the talents of
the students of the Department. Our Department initiates the students to a
set of topics that are handled by eminent scholars from the respective areas.
In the year 1984, the Department had the privilege of inviting Prof. George
Mclean of Washington D.C. University, USA who was also the founder of World
Metaphysics Society. Prof. P.T. Raju had visited our Department. Further,
the Department had even organized talks by eminent professors belonging to
other Departments of this College and also professors from other Colleges
who spoke on the importance and relevance of Philosophy to their fields. Thus,
the association gave an opportunity for both the students as well as its faculty
to interact gainfully with these dignitaries. These interactions enabled the
students to enrich themselves on their subject even outside the purview of
the prescribed syllabi.
The next aspect of this association revolves around giving the necessary
impetus to its students to realize their talents in the competitive world.
The Department accomplished this task by conducting intercollegiate competitions
for the students of Philosophy. An intercollegiate Quiz competition in Philosophy
was conducted by the Department in the year 1998. The Department also organized
an intercollegiate debate on “The Significance of Purusarthas in the
Present Day World” in the following year. These events gave scope for
our students to exhibit their talents and simultaneously focused on the existing
talents among the students of Philosophy in the city of Chennai.
The Philosophy Association was inaugurated on 15-10-2001 by Dr. C.L.Ramakrishnan.
DIG (Rtd.) by giving a talk on “The Philosophy of Visistadvaita”.
Dr. Jim Perry; Professor of Philosophy – Hills Horough Community College,
Tampa, Florida, USA visited the Department and delivered a lecture on ‘Random
Energy, Routine Skill, Reflective Vision and the Vision of the Mind”.
On the same day (04-01-2002) Dr. Sundari Krishnamurthy, Department of Sociology,
Stella Mary’s College spoke on the various systems of Indian Philosophy.
The lectures were arranged for the above two full – bright scholars
by the United States educational foundation in India, Chennai.
To promote world peace through “World Parliament”, the Philosophy
Association arranged a meeting on 03-07-2002. Ms. Eugenia Almond, Colorado,
Lakewood, USA. Executive Director of WCPA (Global) Executive Secretary GSWP
& Deputy Chair Person of disarmament commission of the provisional world
parliament spoke on “The Philosophy of world Government”. Mr.
K.G. Vaidyanathan, President of WCPA (Chennai Chapter) Secretary General of
Universal Love and brotherhood Association (ULBA) Chennai chapter also spoke.

the speakers to the audience.

Plans for the Future
Since our Department functions as one of the Colleges affiliated to University
of Madras under aided colleges scheme, we have some constraints in framing
the syllabus and inviting many students. We would like to go up in the ladder
of knowledge and reach the peak namely to become one of the Deemed Universities
thereby making our Department develop more skills and out many erudite scholars
for their own benefit and for their alma mater.
