Steve Kaplan; Juniors Andy Blum, Joe Mattarella, Ron Fasano and Marty Seltzer; Sophomore Pete Engar; and occasionally Freshman Chris Papianou. The team fared well in spite of little student support and badly abused facilities. This year's turnout had to be an all-time low with only thirteen candidates signing up. Only three of these few had not been out for the sport before. If this pathetic turnout continues, South's future cross country teams will be losers. The poor backing has also effected our schools Indoor and Outdoor Track squads. Last year, the Indoor Track crew consisted of fewer than twenty athletes and Outdoor Track dwindled to twenty-five men after forty-two had quit. The reason for this is simply that most of South's students cannot take hard work. Last spring our team lost over thrity-five men in the first two weeks of the season. Because of this small number the team did not have enough men for each event and its record was one win against nine losses. In spite of what most people think, Track is not all distance running. There are short sprints as well as field events (pole vault, high jump, broad jump, triple jump, and the shotput and discus throws). Our Track Teams cannot rely only on veterans. We must have new members if the sport is to make it at South. Come out and get in shape. See Mr. Aiello to enlist Track Power! |
