Tour of South High
After touring Forest Road, we were even more excited to tour South.  We walked across the bridge, smelling the salt water creek and wended our way along the path to the gates.  We mused about how the walk seemed so much longer when we were kids.  When we reached the big gates, there were some kids there -- smoking and acting tough.  Nothing changes.  (At least they weren't wearing fraternity sweaters.)
Dr. Stephen Lando, the principal, met us to lead the tour.  He was young, energetic, friendly and warm - just like Mr. Bergen!  He explained South's local demo-graphic changes and started by showing us the office.  The counter was gone!  It was car-peted, air condidionted and had lots of computers - like any office in any place of business.  We toured the old "shop" area, which now housed the "technology labs." We saw the new library which was still under construction, and saw the new music wing, learning how South had placed a strong emphasis on the arts.
New track, new fields, new bleechers, old visitors!
When we finished the tour, we were allowed to roam the halls so long as we didn't distrupt classes in progress... but that never stopped us before.  Somehow, the tour of Forest Road and the tour of South evoked completely different emotions.  Elementary school seemed like it was eons ago, but being at South again, somehow didn't seem like it was so long ago.  7th through 12th grade was a very important time in our lives... quite difficult for some. For everyone, it represented a lot of growth, a lot of emotions and a lot of memories.
On the way out, we stopped to read the plaques on the wall - the ones that honored the valedic-torians and PTA Scholarship winners.  When we saw how far back the 1970 names were, and how many classes came after us, I think it finally hit home how much time had really passed.  Karen and Linda Tobin had to leave, and said their goodbyes.  For now, it was time to head back to Mill Brook, to walk around the old neighborhood.
"Excuse me... where are your hall passes, young ladies!!"
