Long Beach! |
On the Boardwalk at Edwards Boulevard |
Summer after summer, even when we were too young to drive, we'd come to Long Beach. The L.I.R.R. con-ductor would call out the stops... "Valley Stream, Lynbrook, Center Avenue, East Rockaway, Oceanside, Island Park and Long Beach!" Towels, radios, and sun reflectors in hand, we began the 5 block walk form the station, down Edwards Boulevard, to the boardwalk. For a while, it was free to enter the beach. When they started to charge admission, some of us jumped the railing. |
Our transistor radios were tuned to hear the 77-WABC "All Americans" and the 57-WMCA "Good Guys." It didn't matter which one you listened to... as soon as the commercials came on, you'd tune in the other! |

In a world before SPF-45 and melanoma, we used Johnson & Johnson's Baby Oil with iodine, sun reflectors, and plain cocoa butter. After High School, Steve used to Lifeguard here... it brought back good memories. |
