Patricia Neal, Richard Thomas, Edgar Bergen, and Cleavon Little star in this award-winning drama that inspired the long-running, vastly popular TV series, "The Waltons."

Set on a Depression Christmas Eve in 1933, this heart-tugging story centers around the Waltons. They're a rural American family preparing to celebrate Christmas together. Though times are tough, love and sharing are abundant in this family.

An inspiring tale of love, hope and spirit, this deeply moving story goes far beyond the boundaries of time and place to reach out and touch everyone, everywhere.

*The Christmas Box                                             ~ 1995

Richard Thomas - Richard Evans

*Available on VHS seperately and together on DVD.
Usually plays on the Hallmark Channel during Christmas!

Richard (Richard Thomas), Keri (Annette O'Toole) and six-year-old Jenna are a loving family helping to make ends meet. Keri learns about a caretaker position in one of the grand old homes in town and persuades Richard to accompany her on the interview. Although stately homeowner, Mary Parkin (Maureen O'Hara), seems a bit aloof, she likes the young couple and offers them the position. Keri, Jenna and Mary become good friends, but Richard spends long hours hard at work and grows more distant. When he finds an exquisitely carved Christmas box containing letters that reveal a surprising clue to Mary's past, a bond of affection finally develops between them. Before the holidays, Richard learns a valuable lesson from Mary - about the true meaning of Christmas and the special bond that a family shares.

*Timepiece
                                                          ~ 1996

In The Christmas Box, Richard Evans (Richard Thomas) met widow Mary Parkin (Naomi Watts), and they each transformed and enriched one another's lives. This incredible follow-up, Timepiece begins on the wedding even of Richard's daughter, Jenna, when he gives her Mary's rose gold watch and tells her the story of Mary's life. Mary came to work for David Parkin (Kevin Kilner), a wealthy businessman, during World War II. Despite Mary's lack of social position, David fell in love with her. At the wedding, David gave Mary a timepiece from his friend Lawrence Flynn (Emmy-winner James Earl Jones). Their lives seem to be on track when suddenly one surprising incident threatens to tear them apart. They learn thei timeless truths about the gift of sharing, the power of forgiveness, and the greatest miracle of all - each other.

My thoughts: This is quite a touching story. A bit sad, as well. May we all take the time to remember, not only at Christmas, but all year through, that family is the greatest gift of all!
The Christmas Secret                                   ~ 2000
Also Known As: Flight of the Reindeer

Richard Thomas - Jerry McNeil

*Avilable on VHS (typically airs on CBS during the Holidays!)

In this magical story, a scientist sets out to prove that reindeer can fly and along the way discovers the true meaning of faith, family, and Christmas.

My thoughts: A true Christmas fantasy. If you liked The Night They Saved Christmas, you will love this, too. It is fun story of mystery and surprise that will take you all the way to the North Pole!
1000 Men and a Baby                        ~1997
Also Known As.... Narrow Escape

Richard Thomas - Dr. Hugh 'Bud' Keenan

*Available on VHS and DVD (with title, Narrow Escape)
Sometimes it  plays on ABCfamily Channel during Christmas.

Based on a true story, this film tells of the tireless efforts of a US naval ship crew to save an abandoned Korean/American baby from the post-Korean War political fallout.

My thoughts: I watched this primarily because of Richard Thomas. I didn't think I would like it from the title (Reminding me of Three Men and a Baby, etc...) Well, I was mistaken. It is very moving and intriguing. As well as Richard Thomas, I love that Doris Roberts and Gerald McRaney are in this, too. The story of finding a home for an orphaned baby boy is capturing!

*Yes, Virginia there is a Santa Claus         ~ 1991

Richard Thomas - James O'Hanlon

*Made for TV Movie

While newspaper writer, Francis Church, (Charles Bronson) struggles with the death of his wife, he receives a "special" assignment. He must answer a little girl's question about whether Santa Claus really exists. Based on a true story.

My thoughts: This is a very warm and touching story. As a Christmas gift, young Virginia gives her father (played by Richard Thomas), The Sun newspaper, which he usually reads a day late, as the family is rather poor and cannot afford such things. Inside the paper, he discovers a response to Virginia's letter, with the headline, "Yes, Virginia there is a Santa Claus", and he proceeds to read, with excitement, the reply from the newspaper. This is definitely a wonderful Christmas classic that should be made into DVD or at least, re-played on television year after year!
*The Best Christmas (episode from The Walton's 5th season) ~1976

Richard Thomas - John Boy Walton

*Available on The Waltons Season 5 DVD. Often played on the Hallmark Channel or TVland in December!

Our beloved Walton Cast all star in this beautiful story. Each family member wants so much to be home on Christmas day, for Olivia, while tragedy and various difficulties, including snowy weather, a car accident, and a tree in the church roof... all get in the way... until Christmas morning!

My thoughts: I love this Walton Holiday Show best of all! The Children's Carol is also very good and available most places still on VHS ( video case pictured to the left), but The Best Christmas is my favorite Christmas Episode. Mainly, I suppose, because the entire family is there... Grandpa, Grandma, Daddy, Momma, John Boy, and all the children! As always, a beautiful story of giving and sharing... one to always watch with your family!

Each program is rated with 1 to 5 snowflakes... 5 being Best!
