MG Metro Engine Upgrade (updated on 2 Sept 99) |
MG Metro Before... |
Picture of the MG Metro. The one I bought is crushed on the front driving side. Besides de crash, engine and 4 pot callipper disc brakes don't seem affected. |

MG Engine Out... (Done!) |
"Hopefully,
lifting the engine will be done with an iron bar and the strength of
four people, more or less.
It worked! Releasing the drive shafts was kind of a
problem but I did it! The MG differencial is leaking oil from the
"drive shaft joint engages". Maybe I've got to replace
some oil seals or something... |

Mini Engine Out... (Done) |
Again, releasing the drive shafts was BIG F****ING PROBLEM!
But I did it!
MG Engine In ! (Done) |
Made it!
Fitting the drive shafts joints into the differencial was difficult but, again, with lots of patience and some taps on them they got in.
Changed the differencial oil seals.
Had to remove the starter engine and the oil filter so the engine would get in.
The MG clutch was cable type so, hopefully, changing the
aluminum cover plate(with the hydraulic arm on it) for the mini one, will
work.
I'll find out when I'll press the clutch pedal with
the engine working. :)
The oil filter doesn't fit because it has a kind of oil cooler on it, is longer than the mini one and they can't be changed (different entrance). "I'll try to fit it without the cooler. I think that way it won't fool with the front subframe." It fits! |

When trying to install the mini fan it fouled with a cylindrical crank breeder. It has to be "hammerized", if you know what I mean... :-)
The starter engine is another problem. The Mini starter doesn't work with the MG engine because teeth are different. So, you have to install the MG one but it has a solenoid (I was told) and you have to bypass the mini one on the firewall (or inner wing).
The radiator, in a mini, is fixed to the thermostat screws. Another problem! In the MG engine, this screws are set in a different position (are rotated in comparison with the mini ones), so, the piece that attaches the radiator to the engine won't work
Testing... |
The clutch doesn't work very well. Besides switching the aluminum clutch cover plate, the arm in it, is much longer which makes the hydraulic pump unable to go from one extreme (engaged) to another (free flywheel).
The car changes gears but the clutch is always "skidding" a bit, which isn't good... :-(
Haven't bypassed the mini starter engine solenoid, yet.
It has one cylinder failing. Don't know why. I've tried everything from changing spark plugs, dizzy cables... I just hope that valves are ok...
Up and Running Again! |
My mini on steroids! Eventually it will run again and disappoint lots of proud Si's, GT's, TD's and, who knows, GTI owners. |
