CLUB KID MODERNE
Perhaps because of the flamboyant costumes he would wear to exhibits was this exclamatory description given him. At shows such as Cannibal Flower, Create: Fixate, and The Hive Gallery, Muffinhead wore suits and gas masks made out of assorted pom-poms, enormous ball gowns made from rainbow colored balloons and on one occasion a wedding dress made entirely out of yellow Post-it notes. While traveling with these shows, Muffinhead discovered that by dressing himself as a living art installation he could better communicate and promote his work while at the same time stand out
from the other artists in the room.
Additionally, since his recent move to New York City with newly wed wife, Amber Ray, the two have combined their creative forces to create "The Conundrums", a performance art duo. Using elements such as extraterrestrial unicorns and fellated fairies, the duo's performances often veer towards the side of the bracingly visual and complex. Turning not a blind eye to the creative forces alive in the clubscene, Muffinhead and his madam can be found mingling with the chic freaks at Motherfucker, Happy Valley and at the occasional Pat Field party (the former where he was chosen as the cover image for the New York Times story on the party). Currently, Muffinhead is
working with Deitch Projects, The Micro Museum, Reflect Arts and Gallery 27 in Chelsea. In October, he'll be performing at the latter in a silent and abstract meditation on the trials of modern city living entitled "Strange Cities."
Still, another facet that is being heavily tapped into in the clubscene today is music. Us Nu Freaks are lucky enough to be among the first to hear a wellspring of talents rise from within the scene with recording artists such as Duke, Yr Mum Ya Dad, Xavier J, The Ones, Minty & Amanda Lepore. just to name a few.
Other recording artists which are currently at work recording (for some) their musical debut are Nicky London, Gazelle and Kenny Kenny whom is scheduled to perform his debut single "Stiletto Kickback" on September 12th at Happy Valley.
The list goes on. Other club personalities that have paved their way to success are Richie Rich with his clothing line "Heatherette" which has recently made its debut at Macy's in New York City, Lui Antinous with his seductive bag lines "Le Monde" and "Le Luxe" which can be found at the Hyatt Hotel, midtown, and Andres Throckmorton Stickney (more commonly known as Dres) with his rubber infused line "DRES" available at the boutique, Opening Ceremony, which was recently featured in New York Magazine.
However, ignorant I am not to club days of yore. They have offered us amazing talents such as Leigh Bowery, Grace Jones and Nina Hagen. However, I also find it commendable to pay proper respect to those clubkids of today that do more than simply bat their feather-lashed eyes or give you a fleeting smile in a wig. I pay homage to those that do not take their artistic abilities for granted, but rather, cultivate a lasting and impressive form of art that will leave a legacy for years to come.
