GEORGE DUNBAR
The GEORGE DUNBAR spent many years in the lumber trade. While enroute from Cleveland to Alpena with a coal cargo, she sprang a leak. The ship foundered on June 29, 1902 in a southwest gale about 5 miles east of Middle Island. The captain, his wife, and their daughter took to the small lifeboat. They reached safety on North Bass Island. Having refused to leave the steamer, all 7 crewmembers perished. Today she sits upright on a mud bottom. Her dominant features are the boiler, windlass and numerous upright support posts. Depth 45 feet.
