KHATINA CELEBRATIONS 2005
THE MEANING OF KHATINA FOR DEVOTEES
At one time, the Buddha was staying at the Jetavanna monastery in Anathapindika Park at Savatthi for the Phansa (Vassa : Rains Retreat Season). One day,30 Paveyyaka Bhikku (monks) who kept only 4 Dhutangas dicided to see the Buddha. However they had to stop at Saketa as Vassa was approaching. After the Vassa they proceeded their journey to Savatthi. At that time, it was raining heavily,so they were extremely fatigued, their robes wet, heavy and dirty when they finally reached the Jetavanna monastery. On seeing their condition and listening to their plight, the Buddha allowed them to accept the Khatina robes.
This year the Vassa begins on 22nd July and ends 18th October. The WPBJ committee members are happy to announce that the robes offering ceremony Kathina will be held on 23rd October 2005 (Sunday)
Many Lay disciples feel joyful to participate in the robe offerring ceremony since it is a meritorious deed.It is often said that the offering of robes at Khatina has special significance. By virtue of the voluntary participation, devotees will gain both special and general benefits.
It is ardently hoped that when donors offer the robes, they need to be mindful and make proper aspirations.Of all the Sangha Dana, Khatina Dana is the most excellent. May all the merits accrued be shared by all sentient beings. May you and your family be well and happy always.
