WRESTLING'S HISTORY THROUGH MY EYES Part 8 - The Tag-Teams Of Wrestling by Damian Gray (trakxx2k3@vicgrimes.zzn.com) |
In San Francisco USA in 1901, the first ever tag team match was staged. The participants in this historic event were Hulk Hogan & Mr. McMahon vs. "Nature Boy" Ric Flair & "Rowdy" Roddy Piper. That's not exactly true, but they looked like they trained the gys that were involved. If I had to pick wrestlers who i believe to have perfected tag team wrestling, then, i'd have to say that the answer would be the mexican luchadores. The Brisco Brothers, Jack and Gerry, were National Wrestling Alliance tag team champions 3 times in the 1970s. Jack Brisco was a former NCAA champion who had a very successful solo career. Gerry's biggest run in wrestling came along with (first ever intercontinental champion) Pat Ptterson when they were working for Mr. McMahon as his stooges. One of America's most fluid tag teams ever would have to be the "Unforgetable" Becker Brothers -George and Bobby- who were mainstays on the old Mid-Atlantic wrestling teritory for more than twenty years. Another great fluid tag team this time from Sydney, Australia was Al Costello and the late Roy Heffernan, who wrestled as the Fabulous Kangaroos. They were often managed by the legendary Red Berry. |
