Bill is named after his paternal Grandfather, William Hadley who migrated to South Australia about 1863 from near Birmingham. William Hadley, married Jane Matilda (nee FRENCH) and had 3 girls and 4 boys, the youngest of which, Cyril George Abraham was Bill's father. Cyril married Clara Irene DOWD in 1924 and had 6 children, Dad was the second born. |

Cyril followed his father into the S.A. Railways and Bill spent most of his young life in the country wherever his family lived while his father worked on the railways. When he was old enough to go to high school Bill moved to Adelaide and stayed with an aunty and went to Norwood High. |
Bill was "mobilized for service by proclamation" in the RAN on 3rd January 1944. He served as a Telegrapher (Signals) on HDML 1346 7/5/45 : ML 804 8/9/45: and ML 1327 1/10/45. |
He met and married Mum while stationed in Sydney and his first born (Wayne) arrived at Crown Street Womens Hospital in September 1946. |
Bill and Martha (known by the Wood family as Carol) had three more sons, Russell, (1947) Geoffrey (1949) and Paull (1951). In 1950 Dad became a teacher and started at a one teacher school Weetulta on the Yorke Peninsula. From there he went to Willsden (Port Augusta), and back to Adelaide in 1960 where he taught at several suburban schools. |
While teaching in Adelaide, Dad coached the SA Primary Scools Amateur Sports Association Aussie Rules teams. Several of the students he coached went on to become SANFL and AFL players. He was made a life member of SAPSASA. He was elected as a Board Member of the Teacher's Credit Union (SATISFAC) |
Bill umpired Aussie Rules all over South Australia, particularly in the mid north and won awards for attending the Port Lincoln carnival for 10 years. |
Bill retired in 1984 and kept active by taking almost all the Lawn Bowls trophies on offer. |
