INVICTA Thomas Fuertig collection This machine is an Invicta Mod. 4, with serial number 5-3020. |
The INVICTA was introduced around 1921, and was the product of Invicta SpA of Turin, Italy. The line survived for years, although it did not achieve a top-selling status worldwide. By the outbreak of the Second World War, collaboration with the larger, more successful Olivetti concern had already begun (the MP1 portable was produced by both makers, with both brand names) and this led to the buyout of Invicta by Olivetti following the War. In 1950, Olivetti completely merged Invicta as a company, eliminating the brand name but continuing to use the facilities in Turin. The Invicta amalgamation was one of the first steps in a decade of explosive growth for Olivetti, and was a case of essentially eliminating the weakest Italian competitor. (Everest would be next.) |
INVICTA Tilman Elster collection This is another Invicta Model 4, giving a perspective of the other side and of the large side opening. Serial number C-4457. |
INVICTA Tilman Elster collection This Invicta Model 5 displays a number of changes. Note that the front frame bar above the type-basket has been eliminated, giving the front of the machine a much cleaner appearance. The Underwood-like toggle ribbon selector has been replaced with a switch, still on the left side of the machine's front. Serial no. 25504, produced after 1924. |
INVICTA Tilman Elster collection This Invicta Model 60 displays few significant changes from the Model 5 above; this is typical of smaller builders worldwide which could not afford continuous wholesale changes or upgrades every few years. Serial number 49528. |
INVICTA PORTABLE Tilman Elster collection This Invicta Portable is actually the Olivetti MP1 design, produced under license from Olivetti. It may be that by the time this machine appeared, Olivetti had already bought into Invicta, but this cannot be confirmed. Serial number 128857. |
HARROD'S PORTABLE Tilman Elster collection Relabeling for Harrod's in England, with label "Soc An Invicta Torino" on the front. Serial 114928. |
