ORGA Tilman Elster collection The Bing Works of Nurnberg, Germany began production of a standard typewriter known as the Orga Privat in 1922. The company eventually changed hands, and names, during the Depression and became Orga Works; at this time Royal Typewriter Company, USA obtained control of the firm. Here is an Orga Privat Model 1, with serial number 15185, produced 1923 or 1924. The Privat series lacks many features found on other "standard" machines, and was sold at a much lower price -- but was quite popular. |
ORGA PRIVAT MODEL 5 Tilman Elster collection At left, the Orga Privat Model 5, as built from 1928 through 1933, with serial number 157716. |
ORGA PRIVAT MODEL 8 Tilman Elster collection Here is a Model 8; note that the manufacturer name on the front frame is now "Orga A. G." Serial number 202253, built around 1935-1937. |
ORGA MODEL 10 Tilman Elster collection It is not generally known that quite a number of the smaller manufacturers in Germany did actually produce typewriters following the Second World War. This machine is proof that Orga A.G. did. It is an Orga Model 10, with serial number 244719, and was produced between 1947 and 1949. These are quite uncommon. |
OSMA Tilman Elster collection Very rare, "one-off production" portable built in Berlin, Germany for only a brief period. Serial number 12517. |
ORGA PRIVAT MODEL 3 Will Davis collection Another "European typewriter" we've been very lucky to get in the US, which very likely came over with a serviceman or woman following the Second World War. Fully operational, although it does show signs of hard use -- the rear feet have been replaced, long ago, by a piece of wood made to the perfect height. Another sign of the shortage of typewriters during and after that war. Serial number 62733, built about 1926. Testing reveals that despite its lack of common features, it is very pleasant to work with, with a crisp feel and decent speed. |
