=========== Cam Lift Chart =========== Below is a chart of the Weaver's Delight harness lifting Cams. It indicates at which position or pick the cam will lift a harness. This is what I have interpreted from the original booklet, "Instructions for Assembling And Operating The Weavers Delight Loom". |
>Looks to me like your weave structure choices are >tabby and tabby and tabby. Has anyone using one of >these (Weavers Delight) found differently? >Krys The harness frames on the Weavers Delight loom are raised by cams. These cams are on a shaft that turns when the beater is swung, and therefore no treadles are on the loom. Each stroke of the beater index's the shaft to 1 of 4 positions. (Think of the hour hand on a clock: 12:00 3:00 6:00 9:00) Each harness frame sits on it's own cam. There are 4 cam types and they can raise the harness frames like this: (Remember, the cams turn to 1 of 4 possible positions) Single lobe - Lifts only one time during a complete revolution. Two opposing lobes - Lifts every other time. (Think Tabby) Two consecutive lobes - Up for 2 positions, down for 2. (Think 2/2 twill) Three consecutive lobes - Up for 3 positions, down for 1. (Think 3/1 twill) These cams can be mixed and matched. Any frame could have one of these four possible cams. So, the possible combinations should be: 4 X 4 X 4 X 4 = 256 combinations There are a couple of combinations that would create invalid positions. Such as having all the shafts up or down for a given shaft position. This reduces the number of combinations to 254. Granted, some of these would not produce a good weave structure. Some would simply be a reversal of order and would not change the structure. The Weavers Delight manual list several designs and the cam combinations to make them. Plain Cloth Double Plain Jeans Satinet Kersey Twill Tweed Birdseye 3-ply Seamless Bags Cassimere Herringbone Union Cloth Double Thick Double Width No's 1 - 9 In addition, brief instructions are given for selecting the cams to design your own structures. If you add in the element of different threadings, the possiblities of different weave structures will keep you busy for a long time. Rod, t.f.c. |

These are 2/2 twill cams. Here all four cams are the same. These will lift the harness frames the same as if you were treadling : 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, 4-1. (This picture was taken before the loom was put together). |
