Marie-Olivier Manithabehick Sylvestre (1615-1665) |
||||||||||||||||||||||
Marie Manitouabewich was born on September 10, 1615; near present-day Montreal, the daughter of an Algonkin Chief; Roch Manitouabewich; and his wife Outchibahabanoukouehou. In the fall of 1637; an event took place that would forever change her life, since it was at that time that the family decided to spend the winter with the French Missionaries. While there, the Jesuits were able to convince her parents to allow herself and her brother to become baptized into the Christian faith. Her brother was given the name Francois, after his godfather, Francois de Re, Sieur de Gand, and Manithabehick was batized Marie-Olivier; after her Godfather, Olivier Le Tardiff. It was hoped that the children could be trained in the ways of the French, so Francois was taken to France for further instruction, while the intelligent and beautiful Marie was left in the care of Marie Rollet; who was then married to Guillaume Hubou; where she was engaged as a domestic. Marie de L' Incarnation and Madame de la Peltrie from the Ursuline Convent; ensured that she was given a good education, and Marie; an apt pupil; grew into an enchanting young woman; embracing the best of both cultures. Several years before, Champlain had promised the Canadian people that there would be an exchange of young French women for Native, each being raised in the culture of their adopted families. Le Tardiff was given three such young girls, including Marie, and Champlain himself took three; but few; if any; French women were presented to their hosts. Had Marie's family, or the families of the other girls realized this at the time, I'm sure they never would have consented to the adoptions. Of course, by now, Canadian-born Marie, was well trained as a good French wife, and though I'm sure she had many suitors, one man in particular, Martin Prevost, became rather smitten with Marie. An employee of the Company of 100 Associates, Martin worked as a clerk at the Cape Diamond Trading Post, and would probably have seen Marie on a regular basis, strolling by the Company store. Olivier Le Tardiff was the Commissioner General of the Company; and as such Martin's boss; but on November 3, 1644, he acted as a wittness, along with Guillaume Couillard, to the marriage of his Goddaughter Marie-Olivier Sylvestre and Martin Prevost. Father Vimont performed the ceremony, and a few months later the couple settled at Beauport, where Martin had obtained land; a little to the west of Montmorency Falls. He and Marie would have nine children before her death on September 10, 1665 in Ville De Quebec. In 1983; a plaque was unveiled in Paris, France; commemorating the marriage of Martin Prevost and Marie Manitouabewich; as the first marriage between a French-Canadian and Native-Canadian; but this unfortunately is just another silly first so revered by those of European descent. There were many 'legal' marriages entered into by Canadians with European Immigrants, long before Marie's; so while it may have been the first by a Jesuit Priest representing the French Crown in the Kebec Colony (a Recollect Priest married Charles La Tour and his Wapneki wife more than a decade before and I'm sure there were others); the Canadian people still held the power over the country at the time, and were performing legitimate marriages on a regular basis. |
