The Godefroy Families

The Godefroy family of Quebec began with the arrival of two cousins in 1626; Jean-Paul and Jean-Baptiste; though only Jean-Baptiste would leave heirs to carry on the name.  Jean-Paul's father Robert was a member of the Company of 100 Associates.

Marie-Madeleine Le Gardeur (1635-Unknown)

Marie-Madeleine Legardeur was born about 1635 in Thury-Harcourt, Normandy, France; the daughter of Pierre Legardeur and Marie Flavery.  She married Jean-Paul Godefroy on October 3, 1646 and the couple had two daughters; Barbe and Charlotte.  Barbe died as a child and Charlotte became an Ursuline nun.

Marie Leneuf (1612-1688)

Marie Leneuf was born about 1612 at Caen, Calvados, Normandy, France; the daughter of Mathieu Leneuf and Jeanne Marchand.  She married Jean-Baptiste Godefroy on December 15, 1636, and the couple had ten children.  Jean-Baptiste had arrived in Quebec in 1626 and had spent three years living with the Huron, to learn their language and customs, and was then engaged as an interpretor. He died on March 28, 1678 at Trois Rivieres and Marie on October 22, 1688..

The Next Generation

Michel Godefroy - Was born on October 21, 1637 and died on May 17, 1709 at Trois Rivieres.  He married Perrine Picote and the couple had six children. Louis Godefroy - Was born on March 20, 1639 and died on January 21, 1679 at Trois Rivieres.  He married Marguerite Seigneuret and had one child. Jacques Godefroy - Was born on March 06, 1641 and was killed by the Iroquois on June 15, 1661.  He never married. Jeanne Godefroy - Was born on April 11, 1644 and died on June 28, 1713.  I believe she became a nun. Joseph Godefroy - Was born on July 20, 1645 and died on November 22, 1696 at Trois Rivieres.  He married Catherine-Therese Poulin and the couple had ten children. Amador Godefroy - Was born on July 18, 1649 and died on September 10, 1730.  He married Francoise Isabel and the couple had one child. Pierre Godefroy - Was born on January 20, 1651 and died in 1685.  He became an officer in the Frontenac Guards. Marie-Renee Godefroy - Was born on October 19, 1652 and died on May 1, 1736.  She married Pierre Belanger and the couple had ten children. Pierre-Jean Godefroy - Was born on September 30, 1655 and died in 1665 at the age of ten. Jean-Baptiste Godefroy - Was born on March 31, 1658 and died unknown.
