In Search of a Pastoral Paradise
The Acadians
On March 1, 1524, Giovanni da Verrazzano (Jean Verazan) of Dieppe visited Labrador,
Newfoundland and as far south as the Carolinas,
claiming all the land for the King of France.  He called the new lands Achadia, which in Greek and Roman classics was a term used to describe to a Pastoral Paradise; evidence of how impressed he was with the what he saw.
Ten years later, Jacques Cartier would explore the region again, and though he only stayed a few days, left a written account of his experiences.

The first to attempt settlement was Sieur De Monts, who arrived in 1604 with amoung others, Samuel De
Champlain and Jean De Poutrincourt.  Champlain, was charged by the king to write a "faithful account of all he saw", so he mapped and described in detail the coastline and bays, giving flowery accounts of the land and waterways.

Poutrincourt was in charge of providing soldiers and munitions, but he became smitten with a beautiful bay and asked if he could have it as his own.  He named his future settlement Port Royal, and though he made several attempts at colonization, met with failure and aborted all plans.  His son however, remained in the area with his cousin Charles De La Tour, who would later play an important role in it's development.
