Hit the forward button
Address the letter to yourself.
In the body of the message area, at the very top left, write:

Send this e-mail to yourself.
You will receive the e-mail with all of the codes exposed.
Look for code that starts with
You might see the full link address to your image.
An example would be:

If that is the case, you can take the link to:
http://community.webtv.net/SecretAdmirer/scrapbookupl oad
Fill in the link address, press upload and your image will be in your Scrapbook.

Image received as Attachment
If you receive an (image) attachment in your WebTV e-mail account:
When you open the e-mail, the Scrapbook feature will appear on your left sidebar.
Click on the word Scrapbook
Click on "Add to your Scrapbook"
It's that easy!
If you do not see the Scrapbook feature on your left sidebar, you either haven't activated your Scrapbook or you did not receive an image attachment.

If you were unable to upload the image, it could be because the image is too large or your scrapbook does not have enough room.

To reduce an attachment:

  • First, you must open a free e-mail account at:
    HugKiss
  • Forward the e-mail to your HugKiss e-mail account
  • Go to your HugKiss account and open the e-mail
  • The image is now an attachment
  • At the top of your e-mail you will see the name of you attachment.
  • Take note if it ends in .jpg or .gif (example: donut.gif)
  • Click on "download attachment"
  • Press your goto key
  • Press the "Show Last" button
  • Press and hold the cmd key
(wired keyboards use the Windows™ logo key)
  • Press the A key to highlight the address
  • Press the C key to copy the address
  • Immediately Goto WebFX
  • Erase the address inside the box
  • Paste the copy of your address in by:
Pressing and holding the cmd key
    (or that Windows™ logo key)
Press the V key to paste the address
  • You will need to add either .jpg or .gif to this address (what you saw in your HugKiss e-mail example: donut.gif , you would then add .gif)
  • Click on "apply effect" (on bottom right)
  • Click on "mail this picture" (very bottom)
  • Address the form to yourself and click "send this pic"
  • Inside your WebTV mailbox, open the e-mail
  • You will see the Scrapbook feature in your left sidebar
  • Click on "Scrapbook"
  • Click on "Add to Scrapbook"

To rule out a full scrapbook:

  • Go to your Page Builder Index
  • Click on "Clean up" (on left sidebar)
  • At the very top you will see what percentage your documents are taking up of your storage space.
  • Click on "Scrapbook"
  • Again, at the top you will see what percentage of storage is being used.
  • Combine the two percentages.
  • Minus that from 100% to see what, if any storage you have left.
For example, if your documents are taking up 5% of your storage and your scrapbook is consuming 57% of your storage, the total used storage is 62%. Minus that from 100% means that you have 38% of your storage left.
  • The maximum file size you can upload is 200,000 bytes. This would take up approximately 7% of your allotted storage. You wouldn't be able to upload a large image if your scrapbook capacity was over 93%.

Stuff the image sender needs to know:

  1. Your e-mail inbox storage capacity is 2 megabytes.
  2. Files sent to you must be under 200,000 bytes.
  3. Files should not be zipped.
  4. Photographs should be sent in JPEG format, be under 200,000 bytes, using 50% compression.
  5. Graphics should be sent in GIF format, under 200,000 bytes, and as a 16-color file.
  6. It is preferable to send one image per e-mail.
  7. When selecting the size of a scanned photograph, keep in mind that the WebTV screen size is approximately 544x372 pixels (a computer screen is often set at a larger 640x480 pixels or 1024x768 pixels). A photograph scanned at 272x186 pixels would take up 1/2 of your webtv screen.
  8. The name of the file should not have an underscore in it. Steve_Smith.jpg would be a problem, but stevesmith.jpg would not.
Note: Asking how many bytes are in the average photo is like asking how many calories there are in a dinner. The variables are numerous. The Scanning Service (sender) will know after he scans your photo and before he e-mails it. He does have the capability to reduce the size before he sends it.

From there I pressed my Return key and then "Add to Scrapbook" to upload Santa.

You can "cut n paste" this code:

Important: This information is ever changing. Prices change, services change, technology changes. I will do my best to keep this up to date. Always verify the information firsthand. This information is presented to make you aware of the possibilities so that you can make an economical and efficient purchase.

If the photograph or image is not online, it is offline. To get an image online, try:

  1. Mock Scanner - WebTV Plus Users can use their video or digital camera as a mock-scanner. I taped a photograph to my wall and used my video camera to take a picture of my picture. I played with the lighting, and had to work with taping it to a flat surface, but all in all, it turned out great.
Plus users can plug their video or digital camera into the back of their WebTV Plus to take photos.
    • From your homepage, click on Community
    • Click on Pagebuilder
    • Click on Scrapbook (on left)
    • Click on Capture
    • Click on Add Picture
    • Mission complete!

  2. Free scanning with roll development - When having a roll of film developed, you can take advantage of an optional service to scan your images. This service is available in drug and department stores at dropoff centers. Read the envelope when you are checking off the options.

Before having images e-mailed to you, read "Stuff the sender should know."

Once you receive them, you will see the word "Scrapbook" on the left sidebar in your e-mail. Click on that word and your images will be uploaded to your scrapbook.

You will need to activate your Scrapbook upload feature, if you haven't already.

If your photographs will not be e-mailed to you, you will need to upload then from their web site. Here's an easy way to extract images from their web site and upload them:

    • Go to http://www.WebScissors.com
    • If you have come there after viewing the web site, you can press "show last URL"
    • If not, type in the web site address
    • Press "Show Images"
    • You will now see all the images from that web page.
Click on each image you want to upload.
    • The image goes directly to your Scrapbook!

  3. Photo Studios When you get your picture taken at JCPenney Portrait Studios, or Sears Prtrait Studios, or any National Photography studio, ask about getting a copy online.

  4. Commercial Scanning Services - You can use a commercial scanning service, like Kinko's. Kinkos Copy stores will let you use their scanners for 40˘ a minute. First time users following the directions "taped on the wall" may take as long as 15 minutes for the first photo, 5 minutes for subsequent use. They will also scan the photographs for you at a much higher fee.

  5. Free Online Services - Free services are sometimes offered from kind hearted individuals - often WebTV users with computer access looking to help out fellow WebTVers or repay kindnesses received.
E-mail Scan-Master@webtv.net for details of his free service.

  6. Pay Online Services - W.H. Productions will scan your photographss for $1 each.
    http://members.tripod.com/~lucky_bs/scannerpage.html

  7. Order reprints from negatives - Order reprints from negatives in conjunction with scanning services. Some photograph developers offer free scanning of all developed photographs. Instead of paying for a scanning service, consider paying for a reprint and exercise the option to have your order scanned and put online.

"From" the Scrapbook to another Site
(like Geocities, Tripod or Angelfire)
The scrapbook image must be published on a page.
The quickest way to do this is:
  • Go to your Page Builder Index.
  • Click on "create."
  • Select the Grey background on page 2
  • Click on "Add an item" (top left)
  • Select "Picture"
  • Click on "Your scrapbook."
  • Select the desired scrapbook photo.
  • Press "Done." (bottom right)
Note: If you want other images on this page, click on "Add an item," select an image, press "Done." Repeat these two steps until you have all the images you want on this page (I recommend no more than 6 on a page).
  • Click on "Publish" (left sidebar)
  • Title and description are optional.
  • Press "Continue."
  • Click on "Publish."

Now go to:
http://www.PBstorage.com/cgi-bin/view.cgi
Type in the URL (web site address).
Press the "Image URLs" button.
You will see your photos with their URL (web site address) above it.
For example:
http://community-2.webtv.net/SecretAdmirer/xo/scrapbookFiles/importD28.jpg

To transload it:

Go to a Transloader, such as:
http://www.Transloader.com
Type in the URL of your Scrapbook image.
Example: http://community-2.webtv.net/SecretAdmirer/xo/scrapbookFiles/importD28.jpg
Click on the "Proceed to Step 2" button
You will see your scrapbook file in the filled in the first box
Next you fill out the FTP Host. FTP Host servers I know are:
Angelfire: ftp.angelfire.com
CrossWinds: ftp.crosswinds.net
FortuneCity: ftp.fortunecity.com
FreeSpeech: ftp.freespeech.org
GeoCities: ftp.oocities.com
GeoCities/Japan: ftp.geocities.co.jp
NetTaxi: ftp.nettaxi.com
PhotoPoint: ftp.photopoint.com
TalkCity: home.talkcity.com
TheGlobe: ftp.theglobe.com
Tripod: ftp.tripod.com
WebJump: ftp.webjump.com
Xoom: ftp.xoom.com
InternetTrash: ftp.internettrash.com
So if you are at geocities, you would write:
FTP Host: ftp.oocities.com
Now that it will soon be on your web site, what do you want to call it? Put the new name in the box:
Rename File: beth.jpg
Sidenote: If the file you are transloading ended with ".jpg" rename your new file ending with .jpg
Now you would write in your geocities (or tripod name, etc.) account name
FTP Name:(R) bethsplace
Next you fill in your geocities (or tripod, etc) password:
FTP Password: *******

And then push "Transload File" button

Sound Files
Note: The Scrapbook is your File Manager. Currently the only files you can upload to your Scrapbook are image files.

Note 2: The only way to have sound play on your Page Builder site is to link to it.
Note 3: To insert this or any HTML code into your Page Builder:

  • Go to your Page Builder Index.
  • Click on the page you want to add HTML to.
  • Click on "Change page"
  • Click on "Add an item"
  • Select "text"
  • Type your HTML code into the large rectangular box.
  • Press "Done."
  • Press "Publish" on left sidebar.
Important: The "Publish" button on the left sidebar is acually a "save" button.
  • Mission Complete!

WebTV users have two ways to put sound in their Page Builders .
The first thing you need is the URL (address) of a sound file. I will use this fake midi file as an example:
http://www.apbh.net/name.mid

The first way to put sound in your Page Builder is to use the Microsoft tag:

All I did was put the file name inside of this tag:

When your site is downloaded, this song will automatically play. If you want the file to play over and over, add this attribute inside the tag: loop="infinite"
loop="infinite">

Also, you can change the infinite to a number, such as "2" for it to play 2 times or "3" for it to play 3 times and stop.

The 2nd way is to use the Netscape tag:

When I put the of the URL (address) of the sound file, it looks like this:

As this is written (above) the sound file will not automaticaly play. A speaker image will show for the receiver to click on.

You can, however, use this tag to automatically play by adding the attribute: autostart="true"

autostart="true"> copyright Beth Candy 1999-01

And if you want the sound to play over and over again, add this attribute: loop="true"

autostart="true"loop="true"> author: Beth Candy

Why do Netscape and Microsoft use different html commands for sound? Well, because they want you to select their Browser. Computer users must select a browser and can only hear the compatible sound file. Aren't we lucky that we can hear either?

If you want to consider your computer friends, you can use "both" tags!
First use the Netscape embed tag:

autostart="true" loop=true"> author: Beth Candy

Your Netscape friends browser will see this tag and play it. Now you will write:

I guess you figured out that the above tag means "for the browser who can't see embed tags."
So, write the bgsound tag after the noembed:

loop="infinite"> author: Beth Candy

"http://www.apbh.net/name.mid" loop="infinite">

The noembed tag has a closing tag to tell the browser it's done:

Here is the whole ball of wax:
"http://www.apbh.net/name.mid" autostart="true" loop="true">

"http://www.apbh.net/name.mid" loop="infinite">

Common errors in writing this stuff is not using the quotes or only using one quote. Another error is a typo. To troubleshoot you can break down the areas into checking the sound file, and then checking the tags. You can write perfect code, but if the URL is incorrect, it will never play. Sometimes I just erase and start from scratch.

Paul's conscience wants me to remind you when selecting sound files, to only use one from a web site that gives you permission to link. Read more about bandwidth theft here:
http://www.oocities.org/~by2000/badlinking.html

Linking to your Scrapbook Images
Important note: The scrapbook image must be published on a page. Read below to do this, or you can skip to part 2 of linking

The quickest way to publish an image:

  • From your Home page, click on Community.
  • Click on Page Builder.
  • Click on Create.
  • Select the Grey background on page 2.
  • Click on Add an item (top left)
  • Select Picture.
  • Click on Your Scrapbook.
  • Select the desired scrapbook photo.
  • Press Done (bottom right)
  • Click on Publish (left sidebar)
  • Title and description are optional.
  • Press Continue.
  • Click on Publish.

Now take your published page to:

http://www.PBstorage.com/cgi-bin/view.cgi
Type in the URL (web site address) of your page.
Press the Image URLs button.
You will see your photos with their URL (web site address) above it.

Important note: If you are going to use this link in your e-mail, remove the dash and number after community.

For example:
http://community-2.webtv.net/SecretAdmirer/xo/scrapbookFiles/importD28.jpg
Should be:
http://community.webtv.net/SecretAdmirer/xo/scrapbookFiles/importD28.jpg
(I removed the -2 after community)

Here's how to link to it in your e-mail:

  • Go in your mailbox
  • Click on Settings (on left)
  • Click on Signature
  • Type this code in the rectangular box:

  • Click on Done
You remove the three letters URL (but leave the quotes) and replace with the actual URL (address) of your image.

Note: One last note. One typo and it's crying time. These files are case sensitive. See how there is one capital letter in scrapbookFiles? Follow the upper or lower case exactly.
