Chucky Mullins was born in Russelville Alabama. After being orphaned at an early age, and adopted by a family that barely had enough money to feed their own children, he worked hard through high school, and earned a scholarship to The University of Mississippi. He seemed to be well on his way to a spectacular year in 1989 when, on Homecoming day against Vanderbilt, tragedy struck. Chucky went to tackle Vanderbilt's tight end, Brad Gaines, and a sickening thud was heard in the stadium upon impact. Chucky lay motionless for 10 minutes, and eventually had to have his face mask cut off since they could not take the risk of moving his head around. The injury was so serious that former head coach, Billy Brewer, could not bring himself to walk onto the field to check on him. Chucky had SHATTERED 3 of the vertebrae in his spine. He aspired afterward to still go on to get his degree, but, unfortuneately, a blood clot, stemming from the injury, finished him off. Chucky never got down and he always held his head high. Chucky, you'll always live on in our memories. Rest in peace Chucky. |
