There was once a little boy with a bad temper. In an attempt to teach the boy the value of learning to control his anger, the boy's father took him out in the backyard with a sack of nails, and a hammer and told him to hammer nails into the fence until he didn't feel angry anymore. The boy did, and soon there were 37 nails in the fence. The boy continued to do this every time he was angry, and he soon learned that it was easier to control his anger than to hammer the nails into the fence. Before long the day came that the boy didn't drive any nails into the fence and he went and told his father of his progress. His father then suggested that for every day he held his temper, he remove one of the driven nails from the fence. After a few days, the boy told his father that he had been able to remove all of the nails from the fence. The father took the boy by the hand and led him to the fence. "You have done well, son, but look at all the holes you made, the fence will never be the same," he said. "When you say things in anger, they leave a scar. You can't put a knife into a friend and draw it out, it doesn't matter how many times you say 'I'm sorry', the wound is still there. A verbal wound is as bad as a physical one," he explained. "Friends are like rare jewels, they make us smile and encourage us to succeed. They lend an ear, they share a word of praise, and they always want to open their hearts to us."
