On March 13, 2002, at the annual celebration of the life of Darrow at the Darrow Bridge behind the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago the Clarence Darrow Commemorative Committee awarded for the first time its Governor John Peter Altgeld Courage in Government Award. It honors Governor George H. Ryan for his moratorium on the death penalty in Illinois.
