Brown-Star began in 1994 as a side project for Brett Klinker (guitars) (former member of Tel Basta) and Moon trent (vocals) (from the band Pale) who wrote songs and played out in San Francisco for a couple of years with bassist Consuelo Ramirez. Their crude 4-track demo tape was passed around for a few months. To the delight and astonishment of the band, this 4-track demo tape was reviewed or mentioned in several local music magazines. This early recording done at Moon’s flat garnered them the distinction of ‘Demo Tape of the Week’ in the San Francisco Bay Guardian magazine which led to demand for the group’s perfomances. Around this time, Brett and Moon began to concentrate on writing and performing exclusively with this quickly expanding music group.
In 1997, Scot Callis (drums) and Andy Lund (bass, cello, vocals), (both fomerly with Spackle) completed the current 4 member group. In 1998, Brown-Star’s first single, “A Bee’s Dream”, was released on brown vinyl and included on a compilation CD with Red House Painters, Chumbawamba, and others. Featuring Andy Lund on cello, their second single, “Something’s Happening”, was included on a compilation CD also. Local music magazines have described Brown-Star as: “manic energy and intensity “, “quirky melodic vocals, whining, sarcastic, sweet and somehow disappointed”, “subtle playing and precise rhythms made (Brett’s) sound larger than the playing of most power-chord Goliaths”.
Previously known as leaders of the "quiet-core phenomenon", Brown-Star definitely has cranked up the volume, moving their sound loudly into the pop/rock category. Due Damage is their first full-length release and was re-recorded in it’s entirety three seperate times between fall 1997 and summer 1999. A special track, the John Denver classic “Rocky Mountain High”, recorded last year for a CD tribute album, has been included as a bonus exclusively for this promo.
