Jimi wowed the peaceful, muddy, and exhausted audience of 30,000 people with his spiritually-electrified sounds. These fans had the stamina to weather the days of rain, thick mud, hours of music, long hikes to to fresh water, food, and bathrooms....all to see Jimi Hendrix close the festival. Most of the 400,000+ people who flocked to Bethel, New York had already packed up and began their journey home. But on Monday morning, the crowd that remained witnessed Gypsy Sun and Rainbows Band take music to a new level. The Jimi Hendrix Experience had recently broken up, with Noel Redding moving in his own direction. This reunited Jimi with an old Army paratrooper buddy, Billy Cox, on bass guitar. Mitch Mitchell stayed with Jimi, keeping 2/3 of The Experience intact. Adding to the new mix of musicians were Larry Lee on rhythm guitar, Juma Sultan on percussion, and Jerry Velez on congas.
