Dateline's "To Catch a Predator" Statistics!
....

Dateline: "To Catch a Predator"

Tonight's show was clips from prior shows. One unexpected thing came out of this series, they validated statistics many have claimed were true for some time. The May 24th show cited statistics of those caught in the stings. Here they are:

182004 Outside NYC. 18 Men in 2 1/2 days
192005 Washington D.C. Suburb 19 Men in 3 days
502006 Southern California 50 Men in 3 days
182006 Greenville Ohio Pt-I Pt-II 18 Men in 3 days
242006 Ft. Myers, Florida Pt-I Pt-II 24 Men in 3 days
129Men in 5 states and 5 sting operations
...May 24 Show: What happening to men now?
4Registered sex offenders caught
1Man had a prior conviction the week before not yet sentenced
2Men on probation for nonsex crimes
?Various mentions of men who had prior nonsex crimes
5/1294+1 w/prior convictions = 3.8% recidivism rate
129-596.1% who never before had been convicted of a sex crime

The U.S. Department of Justice Study released in November of 2003 provided us with these statistics: Of the 9,691 released sex offenders (2/3 rds of all sex offenders released from 15 states nationwide that year) 5.3% were rearrested within 3-years -AND- 3.5% were reconvicted.

From that same study comes, that nonsex offenders released committed six-times the number of sex crimes within 3-years than did sex offenders released. That is shocking and tells us the focus of politicians is not to solve sex crimes because they ignore that glaring fact! Notice Dateline mentioning those who have had prior nonsexual convictions.

The Internet has spawned a new kind of sexual offender, one who fits today's Federal definition of "predatory" (See 42 Sec 14017 (a)(3)(E)) "The term “predatory” means an act directed at a stranger, or a person with whom a relationship has been established or promoted for the primary purpose of victimization."

Finally, Dateline proved that 96.1% of those caught had never before been convicted of a sex crime. Our claim has been 96.5% but we won't worry about the .4% difference, we used victim claims.
